Minnehaha Nature Detective

Minnehaha Falls, south Minneapolis — and nearby parks and nature trails.

A family outdoor hunt for noticing leaves, water, wildlife signs, and weather at a real city waterfall. Play the premade sheet as-is, or (soon) put your kids’ names on it.

Based on Nature Scavenger Hunt by QuestHunt. Works at Minnehaha Falls, neighbourhood parks and nature trails. The original still lives at Nature Scavenger Hunt.

A park visit

About an hour, or until the snacks run out.

Neighbourhood

Minnehaha

South Minneapolis. Nearby parks and nature trails work too.

A recommendation, not a gate. Little kids can point; bigger kids can write.

Walking

Paved overlook paths are the stroller-friendlier loop. The gorge below is stairs and trail.

The outing (very short)

What you’ll actually do

  1. 01

    Show up at the falls

Meet at Minnehaha Falls — or start at a neighbourhood park or nature trail if that’s closer. This is a walk, not a timed tour.

  2. 02

    Play the premade hunt

Use the Nature Scavenger Hunt sheet on this page. Check off leaves, water, wildlife signs, and weather. Skip anything that doesn’t fit.

  3. 03

    Make it yours

When personalize ships, put the kids’ names on the clues. Until then, say the names out loud and play the original as-is.

Where you’re going

Start at Minnehaha Falls

One static orientation map so you can see the place. This is not a live GPS tour and there is no routed path — the hunt works on the park trails, and on neighbourhood parks and nature trails nearby.

Place notes

A waterfall inside the city

  • Minnehaha Falls sits in Minnehaha Regional Park in south Minneapolis — a real urban waterfall with creek, gorge, picnic lawns, and walking paths. Trails continue toward the Mississippi.
  • The park is outdoor and generally free to enter. Parking, hours, and seasonal conditions change. Check the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board before you go. Last checked August 2026.
  • This edition names a place so parents can see where to stand. It is not a museum exhibit list and not a Minneapolis city hub. Neighbourhood parks and nature trails still count.
